Parents Call for More Attention to Remote Learning and Reducing Digital Inequity

As the Chicago Public Schools prepares to reopen elementary schools next week, serving a small number of students from families who have opted-in to send students in person, parents affiliated with Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education are calling on the district to do more to support all CPS students and their families.

Raise Your Hand parents have developed a plan called Trust Learning Care (TLC), with concrete demands like $12.5 million more for students to access devices and Internet, a full commitment to meeting every student in special education’s IEP or 504 plan, at-home learning kits for young remote learners and outdoor options as the weather warms up. You can read the full list here; below is a graphic summary.

Before tomorrow’s Board of Education meeting, Raise Your Hand and a host of co-sponsors will hold a socially distanced press conference, march and teach-in while delivering the demands to CEO Janice Jackson and Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Co-sponsors include Brighton Park Neighborhood Council, Enlace, Chicago Teachers Union, Illinois Families for Public Schools, Northside Action for Justice, Parents 4 Teachers and the Southwest Organizing Project.
