Attention next year’s kindergarten parents: if you’re applying to CPS schools beyond your neighborhood, you must request an ID for your child with this form. Forms are due December 2.
If you miss the deadline, you’ll need a paper form to complete your GoCPS application. Because the wheels of central office grind slowly, they need two weeks to get you your child’s ID before you can apply online. Maybe missing that deadline sounds like no big deal to you. Maybe a paper form actually sounds good. But I can tell you it is pretty simple to do the online application. If you’re like me, not having to drop off or mail in a paper form is a big plus!
For more information about creating an account with CPS, click here. Also, you can reach out to the CPS Office of Access and Enrollment online or by phone. I have spoken with Karen Burroughs Hanberry, the communications manager at the office, and she’s helpful. Her number is 773.553.2105. Maybe she’ll kill me for posting her number, but she’s the contact and it’s not easy to find these numbers on the CPS web site, so here she is.
(Side note–way back in the day CPS used to publish a phone directory so parents and school staff could find central office people. Maybe someday they will put that on line for the public, not just employees.)
ShaRhonda Knott-Dawson Explains School Choice in Chicago on Facebook Live
Now that you’ve got–or are getting–that CPS ID number, what do you do with it? What schools might be right for your baby heading to kindergarten? Do you know your Options from your Magnets? What’s the difference between gifted and classical schools?
If you need help navigating the maze that is the CPS choice process, Chicago-area mom ShaRhonda Knott-Dawson will be hosting a Facebook Live event on Tuesday, November 27 at 11 a.m. You can let us know you’re interested or planning to attend here.
