The G.O.A.T. has spoken and spoken loudly. Michael Jordan has broken his silence on the shootings of African Americans and the targeting of police and he did it in a big way. Not only has he released a verbal statement, he also made $1M in contributions to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations.
I can hear some of the criticisms already forming: “He didn’t say enough.” “He took too long to say something.” “He didn’t say what he should have said.” “When is he gonna say something about his investment in prisons?” Look, the fact of the matter is that he has spoken. We ask our Black celebrities to speak up and actually do something all the time. Mike has just lent his voice as well as his dollars to advancing the conversation and creating solutions. Mike is using his cache and his hard earned Black dollars to impact Black lives.
“Damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.” And dammit, he just did it. Michael understands “Black Lives Matter” and with his contribution, he is helping everyone understand that. Round of applause for the G.O.A.T.
